What is Flow and why bother? “Flow is a peak performance state where we feel our best and perform our best”
Mihály Cziksentmihalyi (from Flow: The psychology of optimal experience).
In other words, flow is the mental state in which a person performing some activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity.
Flow is the melting together of action and consciousness; the state of finding a balance between a skill and how challenging that task is. It requires a high level of concentration; however, it should be effortless. Flow is used as a coping skill for stress and anxiety. (from Wikipedia).
The Hungarian psychologist Mihály Csíkszentmihályi developed the concept of Flow in the seventies, and along with colleague, Jeanne Nakamura, they identify six factors as encompassing an experience of flow:
Intense and focused concentration on the present moment
Merging of action and awareness
A loss of reflective self-consciousness
A sense of personal control over the situation or activity
A distortion of temporal experience, as one's 's subjective experience of time
Experience of the activity as intrinsically rewarding
More recently, Steven Kotler and Jamie Wheal have embarked on exploring the boundaries of flow with several organizations and businesses to study optimal human performance. Research on Flow Theory includes sports, artistic activities, martial arts, learning, and working environments including management. https://positivepsychology.com/theory-psychology-flow/
